Poznań Fortress – Fort III

Fort was erected in 1877-1881 by the prussian army. It is one of 18 artillery forts included in the Fortress Poznań. It was named after the Prussian Genereal Grad Kirchbach.

The 850 meters long 5,5 m deep and 9 m ditch surrounds the area. Ditch is defended by 5 caponiers: neck caponier, 2 shoulder caponiers and by 2 combat chambers inside the barracks. Artillery rampart spreads along whole neck and shoulders of the fort. There are 21 positions for cannons and 14 garages for them. In the center, there are two courtyards separated by the earthwork of the main communications corridor (potern). Two-floors barracks situated in the neck of fort and the undershaft chambers used for the needs of the artillery are connected with it. Two gunpowder war magazines were built under the shoulder sections of the artillery rampart. Each of them was able to contain 35 tonnes of black gunpowder. Blockhouse and drawbridge placed in front of the gate were protecting an entry to the fort. In 1889 the fort was reinforced by building two artillery batteries on it’s shoulders. Armoured obserwation copulas were installed during consecutive modernizations.
